Why Do I Want to Be a Teacher?
My first day of school in Kindergarten, I was extremely nervous. I’m sure that every little kid has that anxious-butterfly-in-their-stomach sort of feeling but I remember being extra, extra nervous. It didn’t help that right before I got onto the school bus, my mom was in tears and hugging me so tight as if she thought that she would never see me again. I remember thinking to myself, what am I doing and where am I going?
The bus ride seemed endless; it felt as though I would never get there. Finally, the bus pulled into the schoolyard and I was escorted to my class. As I walked in, this overwhelming feeling came over me. Everything looked and felt different and I was definitely out of my comfort zone.
My Kindergarten teacher is the reason that I want to be a teacher today. She has had such a big impact on my life and I hope to follow in her footsteps. This teacher knew exactly what she was doing and she was absolutely great at her job. She made her students feel comfortable and soon enough, even on that first day, she made me forget about my nerves and allowed me to start feeling as though I belonged.
As I grew up and had more and more teachers I knew that my kindergarten teacher was much different from the rest. Not only was she caring and compassionate but she loved her job. I felt as though she wanted to help her students, I was able to see how passionate she was with what she was doing. I believe that all teachers have a purpose and this teacher did not only teach her students something; she was also there for them. What made her such a great teacher was that she knew how young children feel; they’re nervous, unsure, sometimes shy and quiet and they need guidance and reassurance. She was willing to do all that she could to help them feel comfortable in the classroom. My goal is to take what I have learnt from her, adapt it and use it in my own classroom.
Another aspect which geared me towards becoming a teacher is that I believe that teachers should work on pinpointing the weaknesses of the class and find new ways to approach a situation. If a teacher is always trying to teach a topic a certain way and it isn’t working out, they must step back and take a look at what they are doing. They can definitely approach the situation from a different angle and more students might understand it that way. Many teachers do not do this, and one of the reasons I want to become a teacher is to do exactly this. It frustrates me when teachers are not open-minded or do not challenge or improve their teaching methods. I never want my students to feel scared to ask for help or feel shy to ask me a question. My goal is to always try to explain something in a different way until each student understands. I want to get to know all of my learners and exactly what works for each student.
I believe that my Kindergarten teacher had many of the qualities that make up a great teacher. Not only was she approachable, enthusiastic and understanding but she was dedicated and inspiring. She realized that there is always room for improvement or suggestions from students and she was always willing to modify her lesson plan to fit the needs of her students. I will always remember this teacher as my favourite because she really showed her students that she truly cared for them. She is the reason and my motivation for becoming a Kindergarten teacher so that I can motivate and inspire children just like she has.
